A Pop-culture Icon Returns: Schwinn Reinvents the Sting-Ray
(NUI) - Chopper motorbikes have become one of America's biggest obsessions. Choppers have their own television shows and even appeared in Super Bowl commercials.
Schwinn, the venerable American bicycle company, has recognized this trend by bringing its classic Sting-Ray bicycle back with a cool new look inspired by today's customized chopper craze.
To boost the bike's authentic chopper style, Schwinn partnered with Orange County Choppers, one of America's premiere chop shops, and as a result, the Sting-Ray features the distinct OCC name.
It has been more than 40 years since the Schwinn Sting-Ray rolled into neighborhoods and became an American icon. Sold from 1963 to 1982, the original Schwinn Sting-Ray is widely considered America's most popular bike of all time. That banana seat bicycle has a strong nostalgic appeal for many adults who remember customizing their Sting-Rays and riding them around their neighborhoods with friends.
"The Sting-Ray is a legendary bicycle," said Greg Blake, Schwinn's director of new category development.
"People kept asking us to bring it back, so we did - with an attitude. From the wishbone kickstand to the mud stud fender, every part of the new Sting-Ray was designed to keep kids cruisin' in style."
The new Sting-Ray also features a raked-out fork and a low-rider seat position. Soon to come are cool accessories that offer kids the riding experience of a chopper, like custom wheels, high-back sissy bars and oversized chain guards.
"The Sting-Ray is a new bike for a new generation - a bike they can make their own, like their parents did in the 60s and 70s," said Joe Werwie, Schwinn's director of product development.
The new String-Ray is available at Wal-Mart, Toys "R" Us and other retail locations where
Schwinn bicycles are sold. Visit www.schwinnstingray.com for more details. Various models will be available for less than $180.
